Finding Azar for the first time tends to involve a moment of mild disorientation. Rue de Yougoslavie is a quiet side street off Boulevard Hassan II — no flashing signage, no one outside trying to flag you down. You push through a curtain and the temperature of the evening changes. That's the right way to arrive.

The main room is large without feeling empty. The velvet is dark and warm. The chandeliers do their job without overdoing it. The arches make you forget you're in a modern building in Gueliz. The stage is at the centre — when the show starts around 9 PM, every table has a clear sightline. There isn't really a bad seat at Azar.

The Mezzanine

The mezzanine sits above the main room, reached by a discreet staircase. It offers a full overhead view of the dining room and the stage — good for people who want to watch without being part of the action. The tables are smaller, the atmosphere slightly more contained. Most of the shisha ends up being ordered here, after dinner, while the show continues below.

The Terrace

A handful of outdoor tables for the evenings when Marrakech allows it — which, between May and October, is most of the time. It's the quieter end of the restaurant, slightly away from the main energy. A good place for an aperitif before heading inside, or for anyone who simply wants a bit of air.

Getting There

Rue de Yougoslavie, near Boulevard Hassan II, Gueliz, Marrakech 40000. Around 10 to 15 minutes by taxi from the Medina. Five minutes on foot from the main hotels in Hivernage. The street is easy to miss the first time — just tell your driver "Azar, rue Yougoslavie" and they'll know it.

Who It Works For

Azar works equally well for a couple on a first trip to Marrakech and for a group of twelve celebrating something. The setting is formal enough for a special occasion, relaxed enough that you won't feel watched. Birthdays come up regularly — the restaurant can arrange a cake and a small gesture if you mention it when booking.
